Dear Socrates Sculpture Park,
We’ve been thinking about making a work for the park but have run into a stumbling block. The problem arises in the proposal guidelines. The idea of a “safe” sculpture is tripping us up. With the need for safety, there are so many things to take into consideration. We’ve heard that at one time the earth’s magnetic poles changed positions. Who knows how stable this gravity thing is? What if gravity fled the park? Would Mark Di Suvero’s sculptures float away like so many stray ribbons? Will people stand on the shore of the park and watch the skyscrapers of Manhattan puncture the sky? As a preemptive strike against the anomalies of physics, we would like to propose a work entitled:
